Betty Anderson
Betty Anderson’s Cranberry Walnut Mincemeat Pie was the Grand Prize winner of twenty-five entries in the pie baking contest.
Monika Eaton won second prize overall with her Rhubarb Lattice Pie with Strawberry and Orange.
Third prize overall went to Gladys Cauley-Crist for her Pecan Pie.
The pies entering the contest had to have a bottom crust, an optional top crust, and a filling. Crust and filling must have been made from scratch.
The six judges deliberated for two delicious hours to decide the winners in each of seven categories before making final judgments. The pies were inspected for “presentation” of the whole pie and “stability” of the pie when the first slice was removed. Then by tasting, the judges evaluated the crust, the texture, and the flavor.
The winners of each category were:
Savory Pie – Debbie Desjardins for Quiche
Fruit Pie – Stacey Vargas for Apple Pie
Nut Pie – Gladys Cauley-Crist for Pecan Pie
Cream/Custard Pie – Monika Eaton for Black Bottom Butterscotch Cream Pie
Other Pie – Betty Anderson for Cranberry Walnut Mincemeat Pie
Youth Pie (made by bakers under fourteen years old) –
Sara Topasna for Sara’s Apple Pie
FORS Pie (Pie filling consisted mainly of only four ingredients. One ingredient must begin with the letter F, one ingredient must begin with the letter O, one ingredient must begin with the letter R, and the other ingredient must begin with the letter S) – Monika Eaton for Rhubarb Lattice Pie with Strawberry and
Orange.
Pie Judges who graciously donated their time and their taste buds were Dymph Alexander, Caroline Dix, Terry Dunlap, Dolores Kostelni, Kirk Miller, and Pat Ohleger.
Ladles and Linens owner, Tina Miller, donated very generous gift certificates to her store for each of the winners.
The winning pies were auctioned off during the Harvest Dinner and the lucky top bidders continued their own Pie Festivals at home! |
